The Friends of The Girard Canal is a group of individuals who are interested in preserving, conserving and protecting the remains of the Schuylkill Navigations Girard Canal in Berks County. Built in 1824, The Girard Canal was a 22 mile stretch of waterway, locks, dams and slackwater pools which ran from Big Reading Dam to Parkerford, Chester County. It was used to carry coal and other materials from Port Carbon to Philadelphia.
