Join the Schuylkill Canal Association for an interesting program on the "Minerals of Pennsylvania" presented by Ron Kendig, a self-taught geologist and fossil expert and overall outdoor enthusiast from the Reading area.
Inside the Locktender's House, beginning shortly after 1:00 PM, Ron will provide a hour-long program on the area's geological format taking you as far back to the pre-dinosaur time frame. Samples of minerals, fossils and various forms of rock will be available for review with a variety also available for purchase.
Immediately following the end of the indoor program, Ron will guide hikers along the river and ravine trails in the Lock 60 area. Along the way he will point out the variations of rock formations as it relates to the geological changes throughout the centuries in the area.
Please dress according to the weather and wear sturdy shoes to fully enjoy the hike.
Visitors of all ages are welcome.The Locktender's House will be open for all visitors from 1:00 to 4:00 PM. Come out and learn about the history of the Schuylkill Navigation and its industrial heritage related to the local and regional community.
One of SCA's volunteers will be available to provide information and answer any questions.
Light refreshments will be served. The program and Open House is provided free of charge however donations will be gladly accepted.
